Sasha Pivovarova photographed by Mert and Marcus for Vogue Paris, October 2011
This is absolutely stunning. It invokes memories of the great Vogue covers of the 90’s, the lavender Versace dress clinging to Sasha’s every beautiful curve as only a Versace can, invoking visual memories of Linda Evangelista’s commanding presence on covers past. Yet this isn’t an homage, Sasha is her own woman. There is a vulnerability in her expression, a fragile beauty that is completely of this moment. The coloring of the image is surreal, almost psychedelic. Yet what makes this cover one of the best Vogue covers I’ve seen in years is the lack of text, something that all magazine covers could use significantly less of.
